If you've found yourself in need of a specially built benchtop tool to do a certain job…but have no idea what sized pulleys to use to attain the speed you want with the motor you have, here's the answer.
Let's say you want to build a slow speed benchtop buffer that runs at 500 rpm…using a 1725 rpm motor and a buffer wheel with a 6" diameter pulley. What would be the diameter of the motor pulley?
Here's the formula:
Desired speed (500 rpm) times Diameter of existing pulley (6")
Motor rpm (1725)
In this case, the motor pulley would need to be 1.739" in diameter (1-3/4" would be perfect)
